Multiphysics

Multiphysics is used to represent multi disciplinary problems and is driven by the need of industry to increase understanding of real physical phenomena  to enable the development and design of safer and more efficient, environmentally friendly, products.

Multiphysics is a relatively new analysis and simulation method made possible by the huge advances in computing power over the recent past.

It is used to model the behaviour of complex processes that involve multiple physical models. For example, there could be the combination of chemical kinetics with fluid mechanics or finite elements with molecular dynamics.

The outputs of Multiphysics can be applied to many industries. It is a tool for solving real engineering problems. Applications include:

Model

AeroSim
Examples include the investigation of the Concorde accident following the rupture of the fuel tank. Aircraft Ditching in water has also been investigated modelling structure to water impacts.

AutoSim
Examples include modelling of airbag inflation processes using ALE coupling with a view to increasing the safe deployment of airbags within cars and crashworthiness simulations.

BioSim
Examples include experimentation and modelling of how Boot and Foot work together with the aim to create a better, more supportive structure and modelling Aortic Rupture resulting from vehicle impacts where properties of the blood vessels walls together with the flow of blood are simulated.

PetroSim
Examples include the use of composite materials in the petroleum industry and protection against  incident/accident in the gas and oil industry.
